We would like to invite you to stop by the new PDX Pop-Ups shops this Thursday evening November 12th at 5PMfor their grand openings. Mayor Sam Adams will be on hand at 5PM for brief remarks and ribbon cutting. As part of the Downtown Retail Strategy, Portland Business Alliance, Portland Development Commission, Downtown Marketing Initiative, Downtown Retail Advocate and local design consultant Tad Savinar partnered with property owner Downtown Development Group to turn two vacant retail spaces along Morrison street into PDX Pop-Up Shops. Local artists and designers were presented with the opportunity to temporarily ’set up shop’ in the core retail district, sell their work and even design right in the space. Randy Higgins of Vizwerks helped the designers re-imagine these vacant spaces into their first retail shops, working with student designers at PNCA to create store fixtures, and designing the store layout to incorporate active elements and best showcase the products. Together, we are helping entrepreneurs grow their business, bringing even more unique products to downtown, developing the retailers of the future, and showcasing these properties to prospective tenants.
Workroom 719 at 719 SW Morrison Street, in the former See’s Candy Space will showcase artwork, women’s clothing, jewelry and accessories from six artists.

The recent Portland Fashion Week showcased 5 days of fashion with a conscience. From printing promotional material on recycled paper printed with soy-based inks, to a nail-free bamboo runway, to LED lighting which required no electrical tape - thus saving approximately 3000 rolls from ending up in landfills - everything about the event was consistently on-message. Sponsorship included Lufthansa, SPIN Magazine, 24Notion, and Fashion Wire Press - demonstrating that a growing mainstream interest in supporting green fashion. We were fully in support of the gift bag: a reusable tote stocked with goodies from Boots, Honest Tea, Lush, and local fave Missionary Chocolates vegan truffles!
Held in the northwest corner of the city at the Vigor Industrial Shipyards, local, national, and international designers congregated to present their Spring/Summer 2010 Collections and continue pioneering the standard for eco-friendly clothing and ethical business practices worldwide.
WEDNESDAY: THE NEW ACTIVEWEAR
Wednesday, Oct. 7 saw movement-friendly activewear such as Gersemi of Sweden and Icebreaker of New Zealand, but it was local Portland-based Defyance Clothing which was night's standout. The label showcased a collection combining high-performance, high-tech fabrics with fashion, fit and function - not a tiny feat, considering the Northwest's rep for baggy and BORING(!) gymwear. Rendered in lightweight, sporty fabrics with UV- and moisture-protection designed for the guy on the go, pockets with closures so your gear doesn't fall out, and tiny details like epaulets and contrast-piping, the design of the garments was well-thought-out and beyond your average casual sportswear. Defyance on the runway durning the opening night of Portland Fashion Week. We debuted the Spring/Summer 2010 Collection.
This past Wednesday night we were treated to a tantalizing event at Cain that featured the introduction of Defyance, a fashion forward fashion line and the stunning Tina Thompson who helped choreograph the dance routine that showcased the label’s durability, sleekness and it’s cutting fit.
Founded by former athlete Asaf Ganot, Defyance is a menswear line that utilizes innovative performance textiles to create fashionable, everyday clothing. The brand describes itself as “John Varvatos meets Nike.” The result is clothing that answers to common problems urbanites encounter, especially in unpredictable weather – sweat marks, the need for bulky and unflattering layers, unexpected rain, and general discomfort from constantly being on-the-go. In addition to functionality, the brand focuses on comfort, fit and style. The inspiration for the Spring/Summer 2010 line is Brazil. Some of the pieces in the line reflect the colors of the flag (blue, yellow, green) and also incorporate detailing and graphics that draw from the São Paolo art scene.
While the event didn’t include a fashion show, the line’s Sweat-DefyTM properties were showcased via a pre-recorded video of dancers wearing the line. The dancers, who were choreographed by Tina Thomspon of Skin Dance Company, had previously performed multiple 90 second pieces to popular hip hop songs in the middle of Times Square during the course of the day earlier. The clothing seemed to hold up, and after several performances, the clothing did not show signs of sweat.
In attendance was Richard Vorisek of Housing Works who got to tell me about his up-coming charity “Fashion for Action.” Running on its sixth year, the four-day gala’s opening benefit on November 19th will be hosted by Derek Lam. The benefit will be followed up by a designer sample sale (from 50-70% off) featuring over a million dollars of fashion apparel and beauty merchandise and experiences. Those already lined up to donate include Diane von Furstenberg, Diesel, Hugo Boss and DKNY. Defyance will also be making a contribution to the cause.
Defying the economy, the state of the industry and even the weather, men’s fashion upstart DEFYANCE led by creative director Asaf Ganot will stage an unconventional fashion event on September 30 in New York City.
100 DEFYANCE clad dancers led by renowned NY choreographer Tina Thompson will exercise a massive and startlingly rapid assemblies of liberating, convention defying motion to celebrate and boldly announce the arrival of DEFYANCE.
DEFYANCE will take over Times Square at 1:00 pm EST, New York City’s most high profile location and at night during cocktails at Cain Luxe – the 90 second “happenings” will abruptly express the fledgling brand’s bold arrival and defiance of the forces that too often stand in its way of innovation and original ideas.
DEFYANCE is a cliché and convention defying line of men’s clothing that represents the first of its kind fusion of high fashion with performance design and fabrication. Is it Varvatos meets Nike? Close. But it’s more practical and everyday — a men’s wardrobe fixer that is go-to, super comfortable, easy and confident. Better yet, it breathes, wicks, fits perfectly between tad-too-tight and teabag loose, and won’t roast the man inside.
With Brazil, comfort, elegance & good health in mind, DEFYANCE has selected Vita Coco, the nation’s best selling coconut water brand. The producer of one of nature’s most healthful elixirs, the natural water from coconuts, Vita Coco will hydrate and energize the DEFYANCE dance mob.
Defyance walks the runway at the Fuse Fashion Show in Portland, OR, debuting pieces from the 2009 Winter/Holiday and Spring/Summer 2010 Collections.
